BioI thought when I went to college in 97 that I was leaving Alabama for good. I started with Nashville, but soon branched out to explorations of Austria, France, Ukraine, Russia and, most recently, Seattle. Yet only three months ago—approximately nine years, two degrees, and a handful of visas after high school—an unsettling thought found me in the middle of a Seattle Russian bakery: perhaps the home I had been seeking all over the world was nowhere else than the place I had left behind.
Before I even finished my beef and onion piroshky, there had sprung full grown into my mind what I’m calling the “Sweet Home Alabama” hypothesis. The next day I took a leave from my PhD program and bought a one-way ticket to the Heart of Dixie. Since being in Birmingham I've begun to discover that this city is just as strange and fascinating as any place I've lived in the in-between time.
